However, had I realised it at the time, the suspension bushes were shot.
Unless they've started leaking, the standard shocks are likely to last the life of the car. If you want to soften the ride, I would avoid buying inferior aftermarket shocks.
I'm told by my local parts shop that they reckon aftermarket shocks are aimed to be about 30% stiffer than OEM to compensate for sagging springs. I can't see how you can compensate effectively for sagging springs with harder damping, but it might be worth looking out for.
Some 9000s were fitted with softer springs. Perhaps new springs will do the job. No idea where to get them, though. Saab will charge a fortune.
