When you fit a boost controller, Trionic's ability to control boost (the APC function) is lost completely. Then, its only resorts to control detonation are to retard the ignition (within limits) and enrich the mixture (again, within limits).

However, many people have reported success with MBCs without apparent ill-effect. It seems the key is to be sensible with the amount of boost you seek. On Trionic, the boost cutoff is pre-programmed, so cannot be raised without re-programming, in which case, you might as well do the job properly with an aftermarket ECU. On non-Trionic cars, the boost cutoff was via a pressure switch, which could be adjusted.

With an MBC, it is also important to run only the highest octane fuel you can get (e.g. Super Unleaded in the UK, or Shell Optimax, which boasts "greater than 98 RON"). My Aero gives me less boost on 95 RON than on 98, which tells me that Trionic is backing off the boost due to detonation, and that this detonation would take place uncontrolled with an MBC and 95 RON.

However, this is all theory on my part, and it might be better to seek the opinion of others who have first-hand experience with MBCs. There are a number of people on the Performance board who use them and appear to have had good results.
