This must be the timing chain...

OK,...so last night I cranked the starter with the DI cassette unplugged. The engine cranks with the same inbalance with which it runs (but much more slowly obviously).
Everyone knows that when you crank the starter, the engine turning over makes a sound at consistent intervals. My car makes an extra sound at evey fourth interval.
So, if the sound of the engine cranking normally could be counted out as 1..2..3..4,..1..2..3..4..
The extra noise, which is identical to the others, comes in between two intervals. It would be counted out as
1 and 2..3..4,..1 and 2..3..4..
with the extra sound being at the "and." (like two eighth notes followed by three quarter notes in a four beat measure).
I hope this is understandable. I can't think of any other way to explain it.
It seems this would indicate a major mechanical problem.
What a bummer....
