How many sprockets are involved with the balance chain?
A: There are four sprockets. One on the crank shaft. I believe this is the one which is subject to deterioration. There is one each on two balance shafts. A fourth idler so the shaft rotate in different directions.
Are they all substandard, or only certain ones?
A: See above.
Are any of the TIMING sprockets substandard, or only the balance sprockets?
A: The timing sprockets are very robust to my knowledge.
Is there a balance chain tensioner?
A: Yes. There is a balance shaft tensioner inside the timing cover. It works like the timing chain tensioner (only smaller) having a toothed rod and a spring at the end. It ratchets to keep the chain tout.
Does the Haynes manual describe the replacement of these balance components?
A: If memory serves, no. The timing cover is sandwiched between the head and the oil pan. You may remove the cover without removing either the head or the pan. But I found it nearly impossible to fit it back up. I remember someone mentioned freezing the cover before fit up. I doubt you can do a good job with that method. It's prone to subsequent oil leak.
Without removing the timing cover, you cannot get to either the timing or balance shaft chain and sprockets.
