happy to help!
Just do the same technique you did with the V-8, hone the cylinder walls at the bottom of the piston stroke, no need to remove the pistons. You won't create a transition unless you're REALLY hogging out the cylinders...not advisable :) You're just trying to 'break the glaze' and freshen up the cross hatching for good oil suspension. The transition that you SHOULD watch out for is at the TOP of the piston stroke. if you can feel a groove or ridge at the top of the stroke, that's not good, most likely the rings are broken at that point.
it CAN be done DIY. That being said, this was one of the more involved if not THE most involved cylinder head I've done, but also taking into account all the spaghetti from the front end as well.
I would say that if you have the tools, time, and inclination, go for it! If I had to do it over again, I would:
Work in larger bites: it took over a month for me to do, but I was very sick w/flu for a good chunk of that. I always work better when I can wrench for say 6 hours vs. 2. Seems like when working in shorter time bites you always have to come back, figure out where you were, and then continue. Not nearly as efficient.
Be more organized: Normally I keep all the fasteners, etc. in coffee cans. That's fine when doing a head on a Tercel or something....there are a LOT of fasteners on these things and there is always one or two from a set that are different lengths, etc. I would keep them in labeled containers if I had to do it over again and not trust my memory so much.
Hope that helped!
