I have had similar issues with my alternator. It tested fine in the shop and I was told it was probably the field wire. I always had voltage at the field wire, however, and if the battery light comes on when you turn the ignition switch I think that's a fairly good indication that current is flowing freely through the field wire to the alternator and that wire is probably OK.

When I replaced my alternator all my problems went away (so far anyway). Initially I replaced just the regulator but this only helped for a short time. I think that this is fairly unusual and a replacement regulator (around $36 from Sobstory or other fine Saab distributors) would usually be all that's needed.
