My car is a 94 CS Turbo I didn't remove the headliner, but removed enough items to pull it down for access. You will need TorX tools and and a 10mm socket wrench (to tighten bolts around sunroof) The following is Gene's note to me:
My car is a 1990 hatchback, but my guess is that they are very similar.
There are no hidden clips that hold in the headliner, so it is pretty much
what you see. Starting from the front:
Remove the visors and clips that hold them towards the center. The power
for the mirror light either goes through contacts on the clip (early models) or through the tube that the visor pivots on (later models).
Remove the sunroof motor cover by pushing open the cover and taking out the
exposed screws. You don't need to remove the mirror.
Open the sunroof and remove the trim around the edge of the opening. It
just pulls off.
Remove the grab handles over the front and rear doors by prying out the
rubber plug and removing the screws.
Remove the dome light.
Pull down the edges coverings on all the door openings. You don't have to
remove them, just let them hang.
Remove the plastic plug in the center of the rear seating that holds the
roof up. This was kind of a struggle to get out.
Remove a long plastic channel at the back of the headliner over the rear
hatch area. This was on my car, it may not be present on yours.
Seriously consider removing the rear quarter panel covers and the front
A-pillar covers. You don't absolutely have to remove them to get the roof
out, but it makes it much easier to put the roof back in.
At this point, if I remembered everything, you should be able to sit in the
trunk and pull the headliner down and back out of the car. If you are
getting resistance, check the area that seems to be binding an look for
something obvious.
At a very cautious pace, I had the headliner out of my car in one half an
hour.
When it comes time to put the headliner back in, you'll need an assistant to help guide it in to place. My 12 year old daughter worked just fine, and it didn't exceed her attention span. Reassembly time is also under a half an hour. Use Zip-Lock bags to keep all the fasteners organized.
While you have the headliner out, pull each of the drain tubes off the sun
roof pan and check for blockage. You should be able to blow through them,
although there will be some resistance due to the rubber valves at the far
ends of the drain (by the rear wheels and in the "aquarium").
