It seems that the water pipe falls about a half inch short of the water pump. I stupidly threw the old pump away so i cant compare. But on the new one the pipe needs to be protruding 1/2 inch (measured from the outer edge of the stopper on the pipe) past the point at which the pump batts up against the engine. That means the pipe needs to be about an inch past the mounting surface.
