I've done a lot of work with this on my '87 and posted to this board often regarding replacing master, slave, and removing the transmission. search under my name and you should find a lot.
simple dianostic:
is clear clutch fluid leaking from the bottom of the transmission or is fluid level in the reservoir going down? If so, the seals in your slave cylinder have probably degraded to the point that they no longer maintain hydraulic pressure - thus the "mushyness in the clutch pedal feel. This means you'll have to remove the transmission and replace the slave cylinder - it is a tractible job but expect it o take a couple of days. If you are going to all that trouble you'll find it a good time to replace your clutch disk, pressure plate, throw-out bearing, and have the lywheel resurfaced (as my car is a beater and I'm a poor grad student I only replaced the slave and throwout bearing) I don't know but I've heard that a shop would charge ~800-1000 for this sort of job.
But maybe it is the master cylinder - if so you won't notice fluid leaking just the feel you described.
here's the checklist I went through:
(1) bleed the clutch hydraulic system (higher than atmospheric pressure required - bicycle pump ok)
(2) if no improvement, replace the master cylinder (rubber seals $20, new part ~150)
(2.5) bleed the system again
(3) if fluid is leaking from the bottom pull the transmission, replace lots of parts and hope that this finally fixes it
one other thing you should check is the wear in the joint where the clutch pedal attaches to the dashboard. This is prone to strange wear patterns and will sometimes cause a little "chatter" in the feel of the pedal at the top of the arc - new ones from saab are ~100 - this would be by far the easiest fix.
I don't mean to inspire nerousis but pay careful attention to the pedal - I noticed the odd feel one day and the system died in a bad part of minneapolis the next afternoon.
