Re: Coolant dripping from water pump. What is a guy to do? Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Coolant dripping from water pump. What is a guy to do?, Andrew ![]() |
A leak from the water pump means that the seal is shot. As Quasi recommends, Bars Leaks may help. I use Bars Leaks for minor heater core problems, but I've never had any luck with water pumps.
First, make sure the leak is from the water pump. There is a little weep hole on the underside of the pump. If the pump is leaking, that's where it'll come out. You just want to make sure it isn't someplace else, and you only think it's from the pump. No leak when warm, but leak after cooling off is also a sign of a loose hose clamp. Make sure all the hose clamps in the area are tight.
Replacing the water pump isn't a 20 minute job, but it's no big deal, either. Get yourself the 9000 Haynes manual, and it'll lead you through everything you need to do. If you haven't changed your belt(s) in a while, now would be a good time to do so, as you need to remove the belt(s) to replace the pump. I say belt(s), because different years had either one or two belts.
Basically, you can replace the pump from above (I've done it), but it's not recommended. You jack up and support the right front, take off the wheel, and then remove the plastic fender inner liner (two pieces). You are now staring the pump in the face, and it's pretty easy and straightforward.
