Check out Quasi's comments on buying used 9000's -

Although I think he's a bit hard on the automatics.
The manual in the 9000 is more robust than the 900 - it doesn't suffer from the same pinion gear issues. It has its own set of issues - shift couplers, clutch slave cylinders, etc, but no transmission is perfect.
The automatic in the 9000 is less robust. The 9000 automatic has a lifetime of about 80-120K miles. Some less, some more, but if you're buying a used one, it's safe to assume a car with 100K on the automatic tranny will need one soon.
Expensive/difficult issues with the 9000 are leaky heater cores and dead fan blower motors. The parts are replaceable, but it's not easy so labor costs drive things up. Since a 9000 engine is mounted transversely, like most conventional FWD cars, a clutch job costs significantly more than in a 900. On the other hand, just about any task requiring work on the accessories or belts on a 9000 is MUCH easier than in a 900.
Other areas to check are A/C compressor (they like to sieze, but that's the same as on the 900), and electrical. Electrical because the 9000 tends to have more bells and whistles, so therefore more to go wrong. But in general, I've had less problems with my 9000's than my 900's, and the 9000's are easier to work on.
Good luck!
