FYI,
As I mentioned in my previos post, my battery light had started to come on and my battery stopped charging. I made it home from Connecticut to Maine with the battery light coming on intermittantly, and after reading some previous posts bought a voltage regulator from NAPA and tried to install it. The voltage regular they sell is a different shape than the original Bosch and as far as I could tell does not fit (I'm going to return it). I then bought a Bosch voltage regulator as recommended by Tom. I probably paid too much, $68 with tax I think, and I was unable to install it myself. Just a matter of aligning two screws, but it is VERY cold here in Maine in January, and the voltage regulator is hard to reach on the '87. I had my local independent garage, Back Bay in Portland, ME, install it for me, they charged me an hour's labor (like $58 w/ tax), well worth freezing my fingers off.
Anyway, thanks for the advice, and if your alternator light comes on, try replacing the voltage regulator/brushes. My '87 9000t's brushes were worn right off (179K miles).
