They go bad after just some few years and don't really do their job after that. They are not suppose to be a stop for the throttle to rest on, you use the 8mm nut and screw for that.

They are only a dampener that allow the throttle to come back down slowly the last part of the travel. And by that reducing emission.

A good dash pot is also to some help with pre 89 9K with coldstart idle problems. It settles the idle down nice and easy and removes some of the stumbles that can happen.
