Inspection and cleaning. Yo can check the bearings for play with a dial indicator. And check for "coking" (burnt oil build up) and do some precleaning yourself. But without a spin balancer and the right disasembly/reasembly tools, you stand a good chance of damaging the shaft beyond repair. If your sideplay and endplay are in limits, oil is not being consumed, and its not coked, you have close to the same turbo you'd get from the rebuilder. Good quality oil and always allowing a cooldown Will let them last a long time.
