It uses a bar antenna and is designed to be a great AM band reciever. Look at CCRadio's stuff. To place an antenna system in a vehicle and mount it on the fender is chosen by the pretty design boys. It should be placed in the middle of a surrounding metal sheet which becomes part of the antenna (ground plane). There are antenna matching trimmer adjustments for the older after market recievers but its been 20 yrs since I installed them and I didn't know if the makers still took the trouble. If you have this a non conductive tool is to be used to tweak it after tuning the radio to somewhere on the high freq. end and tune for max sound level. The low freq. AM travels well and is popular away from the major population centers. I have a wind up radio made in S. Africa made for the bush over there and emergencies over here with a great AM front end.
