Timing chain measurement

There seems to be a lot of dialog lately about timing chains. An easier method needs to be established to check chain wear. With the valve cover off, measurment of the distance between the chain down where it is closest together and roughly opposite the tensioner may give a reasonable indication of wear. This is similair to reading the length of the tensioner except you don't have to remove the hard to get at tensioner and run the risk of messing up how far the tensioner is extended. A simple go-nogo gage would do it. If the gage will not fit between the chain it is excessively worn. Any length of metal, plastic, wood, etc a given width would do for a gage. An ideal way to establish the gage width would be to measure the space between the chain before and after the chain was replaced. The affect of wear on the guides coould also be measured. If someone is about replace their chain it would be a good time to make some measurements. Any volunteers? Comments?
