Speedo Transducer Question

Well, like apparently many others on this site my speedo transducer quit the other day with all the attendant engine management uglies (unstable idle, stalling, etc.). And just the right kind of weather to be dealing with it too (-20C and snowing). Anyway, it appears to be that the wire lead has been worn by rubbing up against the shift rod. I will pull the transducer come this weekend to see what really is up, but does anyone know of any test procedures that I can perform on the bench once I get this thing out? Does the transducer work on a "make/break" type of connection so that I could check it for "make/break" continuity? Anything would be helpful. Once I get it out and hopefully repaired I would like to know that its going to work since I have to lay in the slop that now seems to inhabit every crevice of my underbody.
Thanks for any info.
