The overall reputation of rebuilt compressors here in the U.S. is very poor, though others on this board have reported using rebuilt Sanden/Saab Compressors. It would be interesting to know what the failure rate is with rebuilt compressors among TSN members.
Aeroguy once favorably mentioned remanufactured Sanden compressors, which are distinct from rebuilt compressors. I have never seen any other reference to remanufactured Sanden compressors. Also, some 9000's appear to use Seiko compressors.
The problem is that compressor failure can cause other systemic problems in the ac, so a failure can represent much more than simply replacing the compressor. Multiple compressor failures, even if the compressors are replaced under warranty, can destroy other ac components. For this reason, I have bought new compressors even though the price is high.
