No kidding, the wires were crossed? I just looked at the pic again and traced them out, and they still appeared to be correct. But if you changed them and the car runs, I guess I could be wrong.
I wouldn't worry about some steam coming out of the overflow tank. If you had violent eruptions and over flowing of coolant, then I'd be worried. Does the engine run hot?
So, the fan never kicked on? Did you remove the coolant sensor from the radiator when you had it out of the car? Sometimes the sensor gets caked and doesn't sense the proper temp to tell the fan to turn on. Another alternative is to wire in a switch to the dash where you can turn the fan on manually at any time....it's useful especially in the summer time when you're stuck in traffic.
Your sensor has two wires connected to it. To test the fan, connect the two wires together. You can leave them connected and jump a screwdriver across both wires while they are still connected to the sensor. If the fan doesn't kick on when you do the test, it may have a bad ground.
If you want to wire in a switch, disconnect both wires from the sensor and clip off the ends. Get yourself some wire and run two lengths into the cabin from the wires at the coolant sensor. If you have an "extra" saab switch, you can use it and install it neatly into the switch plate. Justr connect the wires to both sides of the switch and turnit on whenever the gauge starts creeping up.
