Well, I'm not 100% sure on the when but I know they went with chain driven versions from 78 but that change may have taken place in '77 some time. The 4speeds, especially the turbo versions (which may be exactly the same internally, save for the final drive) can go forever. Maybe it is due to the relatively lower torque and HP being applied versus the later 16valve cars but also because the 5th gear wasn't the strongest add on. A number of friends who race their cars prefer the 4speed but then they aren't using those cars to travel cross-country. My last 4 speed sounded and worked great with well over 250,000 miles on it. I don't remember ever changing the fluid but I was young then and didn't know better.
