I think you are better off, obtaining a newer 900.(16valve) The 99 has the B motor, which means if the water pump goes, then you will have to find/hunt the replacement parts, and trust someone(even Saab mechanics fear the job)to replace the pump less damaging anything during installation. The timing guides are discontinued.
This is the major challenge with the B engine, and the aforementioned discontinued timing guides.
As for interchangeability, any rim from a 900, 1987 down will fit, yet you'll encounter a problem with the placing the cap on the front rims for the front axle nuts protrud; however you can change to 900 axles. Brake calipers from a 900- up until 1987 will fit. Windshields are different, Seats won't fit unless the seats are from a 1979, or 1980 900. Tailgate/ and doors will fit. The manual steering may be a bit of a nuisance if you prefer easy turning of the wheel. The rack is different from a 900. Ball joints, are the same. Shocks are different, yet easily sourced. None of the fuel/ ignition system will interchange unless it is a 1979/1980 900. Lastly, a 900 is a more comfortable car.
Unless, you admire the 99 shell, like many of use do on this board; it is better to buy a 16valve 900, that will idle/run better with less fiddling, and harder to find parts such as fuel components for one.
For me, the B engine brings back memories; hence nostalgia. I like it for the memories. A few years ago, I replaced the chain and tensioner, and was able to luckily source NOS timing guides, and even a timing(that was in an old junk yard for years) cover, for the chain tensioner failed, and the chain ended up being jambed between cover and tensioner, resulting in a broken case.
Some admirers of the 99, change and modify to a 16valve engine in an attempt to have the best of both worlds.
