99 timing specs

I own a 1972 SAAB 99 which has a 2.0L "B" engine, model year unknown. (possibly 1979) It has a distributor and flywheel both of unknown model year as well. What is the best way to set the ignition timing? I'm not sure what specs. to use. I was told by a competant mechanic that one way to do it would be to bring the #1 piston to top dead center of compression stroke, align rotor with hashmark on distributor housing, then mark "new" TDC on flywheel. Then, set total advance at 30-34 degrees @ 2300 RPM. It sounds like it might work, but does anyone have another method?
