cool, maybe I'll see if I can get one of those.
Anyway, I got it all working. After further inspection, the cap was getting knocked around by the rotor as it could not seat properly due to the pertonix ring not sitting all the way down on the shaft. I scraped off a bit of plastic from the ring & seated it all the way down with some gentle persuasion using a socket, mallet and a bit of grease.
The car runs amazingly smoothly now. The timing was bouncing all over the place before, now its rock solid. Distributor shaft is definitely worn, but the pertronix covers that up.
For the record, its a 91843 or 1843 pertronix unit.
