ball joints, tie rods, seats Posted by DougM [Email] (#211) [Profile/Gallery] (more from DougM) on Mon, 7 Sep 2020 10:42:07 In Reply to: Re: 99 Steering effort, Tom, Mon, 7 Sep 2020 07:57:30 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Ball joints are the same as 900 and you can spend anywhere from $10 per joint to $50 per joint. As much as you're going to drive the car there is no need to buy the $50 part. Personally I've had good luck with the cheaper TVA brand for my 99 and 900's, and I add grease fittings before installing. I actually have four of them that I needlessly bought(I already had 4 of them on the shelf) that I would be willing to sell for what I paid for them, which was $80 plus another $20 to ship.
Tie rods - there are two different types depending on which rack you have. Stock for '71 would be fine thread - 7/16"-20. and the later racks are coarse thread - 1/2"-13. The earlier racks have a tube diameter close to 1 inch, and the later racks are 1-5/16".
Seat - the parts manual refers to the early style seats(1973 and earlier) as the "X7" type. X7 was a stripped down less expensive 99 sold in some markets. My '73 had those seats but I removed them to install seats from a '74. I've never taken an early style seat apart so I have no idea how easy or hard it is. I found a passenger seat in my basement but the damp conditions weren't too kind to the metal frame the past 18 years. I know I must also have a driver side seat but I don't know where it's hiding right now, and it's been raining all day and I'm not going out to look for it. I'm sure I have no use for it if in fact I do find it. Do you know what part it is? Refer to the diagram below.
