I guess it's important to know what rack you have in there because being that it's 50 years old it may still have the original rack or it very well could have been replaced with a later rack. The early racks had a 1" tube diameter and the later racks were 1-5/16". I would think the best way to check the outer tie rods is to turn the wheel all the way to one side then have a helper move the steering wheel slightly while you look for movement of the ball and socket joint, then do the same for the other side. If your problem is inner tie rod related then it won't be very easy to see with the boots in place and the rack in the car. If it's an inner tie rod problem on an early rack then you will not be able to find parts to repair, and the best option is to source a later rack because the parts that wear out on those can still be sourced. I'm sure I mentioned this before, but if you have an early rack and it needs outer tie rods, remember that they are fine thread(1/2"-20), while the later racks have a coarse thread(1/2"-13), so make sure you buy the correct ones.
