Forgot to put my Name up above... so this is a repeat:
I recommend _thoroughly_ cleaning the inner driver and transmission carrier before you start taking anything apart. I go to a do-it-yourself carwash and wash everything with the high pressure suds, then rinse. This way you don't have to worry about grit getting into the transmission when you pull the inner driver carrier from the side of the transmission. Don't forget the area at the base of the spring towers where the axle goes through into the wheel well. You'll want that opening as clean as possible before you put the clean axle through there.
If the roller ends are sloppy on the tripod, then the whole tripod unit should be replaced. (It's held on the end of the driveshaft by a c-clip.) Run your finger down the inner surfaces (where the tripod rollers slide) of the drive cups. They _should_ be flat. If you find a small dimple part way down them, then it would work to swap them from side to side, but check the opposite surface to see if it also has a dimple. If you find a _BIG_ dimple, then the bad one needs to be replaced. [I've had more problems with the right side (looking from the driver's seat) than the left.]
When it comes to cleaning the tripods, DON'T use a solvent to wash them unless you clean them thoroughly a second time with brake cleaner. The brake cleaner evaporates and doesn't leave a residue that will break down the new grease. Other kinds of solvents will leave a residue. Very often I just wipe as much of the old grease as I cna get off with a rag, then repack them with new grease, much the way you pack wheel bearings. Take a blob of grease in the palm of your hand and press the bearing end into it until you get clean grease squeezing out the other end. If you initially get dirty grease, wipe it off with your rag.
Clean the inside of the cups the same way. Don't use solvent because it gets between the machined hub and the outer sheetmetal cup, and any that is left in there will destroy your new grease. _After_ the axle carriers are reinstalled in the transmission, reach through the axle opening in the wheelwell and completely refill the cups with new grease. Keep them covered with a plastic bag until you're ready to repack them and then cover them again until you are ready to install the axles. Also put plastic bags over the tripods and new boots while you are sliding them through the wheel opening. You must work as cleanly as possible to prevent getting dirt into the inner dirvers.
