I finally had a chance to look at the '75 wagonback with the camper tent option. This is in a cloth bag and is indeed new. I didn't want to take it out and unfold it in case the material was in bad shape and I'd ruin it. The mechanic said you remove the parcel shelf and this tent fits in it's place, going up to the opened wagonback hatch to just make a little pup tent kind of thing out of it. Sounds neat but I doubt it's actually worth any money. More of a novelty probably.

Now on to the car. The mechanic bought it from the original owner who had been a long time customer of his. It has been sitting for about two years. After some coaxing it did start right up. He put it up on a lift so I could look at the underside.

There was no major rust. There is some surface rust around the lower corners of the windshield. Anyone have experience with this? Is it as simple as removing the windshield, cleaning up the rust (how do you fix it there?) and putting the windshield back in? There were a couple of spots of very minor surface rusting and then under the driver's seat area there is a spot that is starting. Other than that it was fairly clean. The paint is shot, though, with many bland, unshiny spots. Although I'd bet with an afternoon of buffing it might look okay.

It has the original 4 speed transmission. The prior owner had regular service and many items were rebuilt or replaced. He actually made Dymo labels (remember those?) and labeled the engine compartment with a label denoting the mileage that each service was performed. Judging by the labels he had quite alot of work done to keep the car running over the years. The car has 91,000 on the odometer which I know must be at least 191,000 since some of his service labels state things were rebuilt at 185k.

The front seats are totally shot. The rear seat is marginal at best. But the dash is very nice and the rear hatch area is almost pristine. Seat covers could surely cure the front seats for a while. The car has soccer ball wheels and two spare steels, plus a host of miscellaneous small items like mirrors and other small parts. And an OEM Saab service manual.

So now I have to decide, do I want a cheap 99 that I could drive around for fun for a while and then someday restore or sell "as is?" I could probably get my $600 back out of it providing it doesn't need any major mechanical surgery. Or do I want to hold out for one with a super clean body that I know I won't have to put any body work into if I treat it right...but will be surely much, much more than the $600 price of this '75. Or just spend nothing and be happy with my '87 900 convertible and my daily driver '02 Chevy Impala?
