Really, due to the fact that I don't like having to check and then recheck and then recheck everything that can possibly wear out or move in a points system, I have always changed my cars over to elec. ignition. On my V4s, I've used the Pertronix system. it is the same as the one Bob mentioned and it works flawlessly. Super easy to install as well and it eliminates any need for a module or "black box" set up. In my 99s, I just install the 99 elec. ignition system that came in the later 99s. You'll need to wire the green/wt wire into the fuse box and the blue to the coil and tach (if there is one)...Easier to explain: just follow the system you take it out of if you go this route. You'll need the distributor as well. Depending on just how early your '76 is, you may have to swap the bottom with your present distributor...different cogs, see. This is an easy inexpensive way if you happen to have access to the parts. I have pretty much everything here at my place just sitting around, save the two prong plug for the distributor...same as on up to '81 900s as well...if you need it.
I know that if you really beef up your car, a more powerful system might be needed. but the performance increase with elec. vs points is nominal if everything is adjusted to the Ts...which as gert suggested, is seldom the case with the points system.

Voila, my 2 cents.
