Engine stands are nice, but I've had good luck just setting the block on a table with a few boards underneath to get it off the table. No restrictions when painting the block that way. Every Saab stand I have seen uses the bolt holes on the driver side motor mount and also bolts to the clutch side of the engine.
Make sure you degrease it really well so the paint doesn't have a problem sticking.
