other than the shocks, the parts you need were all used by 900s. The filter, though, is not the same as the one on YOUR 900. You need to look for the filter from an earlier 900...up to '84-'85 with the 80-valve engine. The 900 you have runs a bosch LH injection system whereas the early 900s and later 99s, like your '78 ran CIS. The ball joints and tie-rod ends should be the same up to '94 900. Earlier 99s used a different tie-rod end but yours shared with the 900s.
Front shocks are not easy to find. KYB makes some for about 30 a pop. They aren't horrible but some don't like them at all. Koni shocks show up on ebay from time to time and Bilstein will rebuild their shocks for about 65 a piece. The rear shocks are nearly impossible to buy new which is one of the reasons many 99 owners change over to the 900 rear axle: a little wider, easy to attach 900 sway bar, easier to find shocks. I'm sure some out there in 99 land will say they have purchased whatever that wanted new off the shelf somewhere, and you too may be a lucky fellow, but that's seldom been the case for me.
Good luck.
Dan
