4-speed shifter problems

I have a 4-speed in an '86 900, but since there are so few 900s w/4-speeds, I thought I'd ask here:
The shifter doesn't work unless I shim the rearward bolt on the shifter about a 1/2-inch higher; if I don't do this, the shifter ball is too low with respect to the steel ring in the shift shaft and I consequently can get one or two gears only.
The shifter came from a 79 900 w/4 speed, so it's the right one for the gearbox. Also, the donor car had no front end damage, so I'm assuming the bend in the shaft is the proper amount. I'm using the proper double taper-pin coupler, BTW. Last, this problem is unrelated to the gearbox itself -- I can easily shift it manually. The shifter works fine when not bolted into the car.
Am I missing something simple here? Raising the shifter mechanism in the rear in turn brings the shift shaft ring in line with the ball, but because the lower metal "box" portion of the shifter is the same part number as all subsequent 900 shifters, my sense is that it should bolt in and shift well.
Thanks...
