The poster also stated it could be a combination of both > valve problem or ring problem.
I've never re-built the lower end of a B engine or replaced rings as they seem bulletproof > in my 20 years of experience. I've seen original cross hatching on cylinder walls after 200k miles!
Drive it, rebuild the 80's engine. If it was me, I'd have the 80's head sent out for a pressure test and resurface at the least. I wouldn't redo the lower end of the engine, or replace piston rings. Maybe a new timing chain and tensioner, or at the least a new tensioner....also check the guides for wear. A total reseal of the 80's engine also.
