THE most important thing you can do to keep the transmission working is to change the fluid in it at least every year, and USE THE RIGHT FLUID.
EP SAE 75 or SAE 80 API-GL-4 or API-GL-5 "In cold climates SAE 75 must be used." From the SAAB factory service manual.
It's not easy to get, but you should be able to find an oil distributor that can get it for you.
I've used SAE 75W-90 in my later (chain drive) 99 transmissions, preferably synthetic, and I have one trans that I figure has about 340,000 on it without a rebuild.
