I may not be the guy to answer this,but here goes:
There are two reasons for having freewheel, though some might push that number to three. 1. (and this can be bunk according to some) the freewheel was designed to keep the 2 stroke engine from starving for oil when "engine braking". See, the engine would be reving up but not getting much fuel. Sans fuel the stroker isn't getting oil.
2. With the freewheel engages, when the car is going faster than the speed of the engine, instead of the engine reving up it will "disengage" from the drive train, essentially driving as if in neutral. The only difference, really, is that once the car slows to the speed of the engine, or the engine is reved up, the whole thing re-engages and it feels like direct drive again.
3. some use freewheel to aid in clutchless shifting, either just for the fun of it or for racing purposes, when heel-toe working is usually the order of the day. Most that race their freewheeling cars have that freewheel locked out. Let me know if I'm way off here.

All in all, it can be a really cool feeling. It took some getting used to in my Sonett but after a bit, I couldn't drive it anyother way. If nothing else, when driving at highway speeds, I could let of on the gas, not slow down as the freewheel disengaged, and actually hear the radio for a few moments until the inertia died down.

If you get a chance to drive a car with freewheel, don't pass it up. It is really something different from what most are probably used to. It would always give the passenger friend something to ponder when he'd see me shifting without the clutch.
