My thrid 99 is a 78 GL automatic that served me well for over a year. It ran really terribly in the rain and recently was prone to having no power until you gave it plenty of throttle and then it sort of worked fine. My guess was that maybe I blew the head gasket between two clyinders and have crappy compression.

Anyway.. I was having that usual problem when we had a extrememly rainly day right after Easter. It died on me in traffic but I managed to get it running again, but had to rev it a lot to keep it from quitting again. And of course, I was stuck in traffic. The final straw came when I had to give it a lot of gas before putting it to "D".. Something went. Not sure what. the car kept running but no longer will move.

So.. what's the weak link for the automatics? I'm pretty certain I didn't break an axle (since the car rolls) , and now when I run it (of course, now that it's not raining, it runs fine.) it make the same noise, even in Neutral. The noise is that there is a thumping- some resistance is felt but no movement of the car. I'm guessing it's something internal, and the golden oppurtunity to put in a 4 or 5 speed.. However, someone suggested that maybe I snapped off the bolts that hold the torque converter (?) to the flywheel.. If so, it means that I didn't kill the auto, and maybe could be repaired, though it still seems like an engine out job.
