Okay, maybe I need to re-phrase what I was on about in my brake system strategy..
Fixing them "right" means changing back to a transmission/axles/spindles/cv joints/rotors from 1972. What I have left of what was originally on the car are broken/rusty/worn out/really broken or otherwise completly unoperable. I don't live in California where cars don't rust. And I can't spend thousands upon thousands of dollars to change things back to they way they should be, which would likely be the costs if I were to source a good 4 speed/ new cv joints, brake calipers/rotors/bearings. I wanted to buy new tie rod ends for this car a while back and they simply don't exist.
This is not a "brake upgrade" for the heck of it. I DO want all four calipers to stop the car and to release from the rotors correctly. I also want the master cylidner to feel smooth and the pedal to come allthe way back to where it belongs. I know I might never solve the "brake balance' problem, but I have the feeling that that's the sort of thing that maybe the high performance people will notice a lot more than I will. When I say an "acceptable amount of brake heating" I mean a lot less than what is happening now. Even when fixed I am not going to drive this car down a mountain and not expect them to heat up.. I wouldn't even expect any car made in 1972 to not have the brake rotors heat up while brakng constantly down a mountainside.
Granted, I am trying to rectify a compatibility problem that started when i did a switchover that was more complicated than I thought it would be, back in 1994 when I was much younger. I wouldn't even be driving the car now if I hadn't done other admitted stupid things and broke my m78 99 5-door, which was and is a rusty winter beater of a car if ever one existed.
I know all sorts of mechanics are on these boards, and some are more quallified than others.. So be it if people think I'm not one or that i'm an idiot or that I have no business at all driving an old car.. I simply asked for some advice, and hopefully find some people who have resolved similar problems on their own car.
thanks,
