another ignition question

This is for a 16V turbo conversion - I originally had the '78 distributor with '78 ignition box on a 16v motor, but I am switching it over to a 16V style ignition.
I already have the control module wired in, and the distributor swapped. I did a direct splice, with the compensating resistor still wired into the system.
As it stands now, the engine will fire up, but dies after a second or so (maybe a little less). Could this be because of the compensating resistance? It switches to higher resistance after the engine starts, right? I notice that the Bentley manual diagrams for the 900 don't have anything like this. Should I just take it (the resistance)out of the loop?
What have you other 16V conversion guys done?
Oh, it also has the original ignition coil, but I have been given to understand that they are the same as the 900 coil.
Any input is appreciated.
thanks,
Rowan
