I think they will fit. The late 77-80 99 hubs are the same hub as the 78-87 900 ones, and the wheel wells are basically the same. You can fit the 88-93 900 hubs and rear axle as well, which will give many more choices for new wheels. People live with some rub, center the rear axle in the wheel well, and alter the bump stops. 205/55/15 is a big as you can go without pushing the envelope. But people have run like 235/35/17 or somethig like that. You need 17" wheels to run the big aftermarket 4-piston brakes. There are some great threads on peoples experiences on the 900 board with the specifics.
