wear items on our cars. Changing brake pads is so simple, that rarely the bearings get looked at and re-greased IMO.
Like Dan had said, re-pack the bearings and install them, give the hubs a spin and listen for noises. You should not be able to hear much noise from them at all and > I would say no noise is good bearings. Torque the nut to 35 ft lbs to seat the bearings, then back off the nut, then torque to no more than 3 ft lbs. If the upset in the nut falls in the same place as before, try swapping the nuts from side to side.
Bearings tend to make a roaring noise when bad(30 mph and up), but don't discount tire noise as the source either.
80's used two different sizes for inner and outer, as opposed to the earlier ones(pre-78) which were the same inner and outer.
