Last night I picked-up a '78 EMS wagonback, that I had never seen before. The owner was moving and the price was right, so I figured what the heck. It was about 40 minutes from my place, so I had a friend drive me down, jump-start the car, and follow me back. The maiden voyage is always interesting because you find out sooo much about the car that the previous owner didn't know (or wouldn't say). Fortunately, this car only had one mechanical problem, an extremely sloppy shifter. Unfortunately, the wiring is a potential nightmare, so I'm looking for some input on where to start...
none of the gauges worked, that is until I realized that the cabin fan switch was ON, but the fan wasn't blowing. I turned it OFF, and suddenly all the gauges sprang to life. but when I used the turn signals, the gauges went down about to about 1/4. Where should I look to figure this one out?
While stopped in construction traffic after climbing about 2000ft up a mountain, I realized the coolong fan wasn't working. I don't remember if it was the steam billowing from under the hood, or the river of coolant running past my car that gave it away. I checked the fuses, and while removing the fuse for the cooling fan, the tip of the fuse touched the tip of the cabin fan fuse and the cabing fan came on even though it's fuse was blown. So, why would this happen, and why would the cooling fan not work? Thermal switch maybe? Both the radiator and fan appear to be new-ish.
I'm going to start diggin in to it this afternoon, so any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks! jon
