clamshell spring compressors work! Posted by DougM [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() |
It took me a while to figure out how to hook it on the spring, hoping I would get enough compression to easily remove it. The top hooked on fairly easy(the left side was easier than the right), but I had troubles getting the bottom two jaws to hook. I removed the two pivot bolts on the compressor, and was able to hook the bottom of the spring with no resistance, then re-installed the two bolts quite easily. Cranked the screw tight and the spring started to pivot away from the top mount. As I was trying to remove the upper rubber, the spring popped loose from the bottom mount and dropped to the ground.
The upper a-arm bolts, where they attach to the body, gave me some resistance, but none of them broke. I'm quite impressed with all the fasteners Saab used back in the day. Almost everything so far has come apart with no problems. No cutting or breaking bolts on this rust bucket. I occasionally work on american cars at work, and I surely can't say that about them.
