Since the orginal post is not named . it will dissappear along wiht the answer.. so here is a paste, so it gets preserved....
( McNash answered the quesion of how to set points with the following)
When setting points, make sure that a lobe is on the high point of the plastic piece that separates the points. This can be done with a remote starter switch, removing the plugs and turning the engine over my hand, or putting the car in 4th gear and manually rolling it where the distribitor cam is on its high point as previously described. The up and down motion of the points caused by the cam lobes in the distributor causes the spark for the plugs. When that is done, loosen the set screw and slide the correct feeler gauge between the points, and tighten. Correct gap is when there is a slight pull on the feeler gauge at the correct setting. It is often best to set the points .001 under the correct setting to get the gap right when tightened. Be sure to recheck after tightening the screw. Points can be slightly warped, and the setting can change after the set screw is tightened. Check the capacitor, and the connections, and with the ignition key on, you should be able to get a spark at the points by taking a screwdriver and separating them.
When cleaning points, all you do is take some sandpaper or a nail file and renew the surface by sanding away the burnt areas. This will provide good contact for the spark. Re-gap after you do this.
