Saabers...

I drove deep out in Conn..to pick up some very decent 99/ 79/80 900 Turbo Inca wheels. I have always like this wheel- the way it glittered on my brother's 1978 Dorado brown 99, twenty years ago.

Well, the wheels that I drove three hours to pick up were sitting for years in the filthy mud. When I finaly returned home with the set, I pulled the grimy wheels (with strange insects crawling on the inner rims) and began hosing them. Well, it still did not remove the grime. Alright, Simple green, soap...etc.. Slowly by slowy, the incas wheels began to shine.

Then a vision appeared before me..of Doug's album.. the pictures of him refinishing the soccerballs for the black 75. As I kept envisioning the masking. taping, paint work, and shine after, displayed in the series of photos- I kept scrubbing harder.

Well all the dirt was gone, and I placed the wheel upright, and although clean, it did not glisten. So it is my understanding, that almost any older wheel, car, or any antique. does not refelcts its beauty unless shiny.

I wonder what make certain men go that extra mile, and have their projects in the concours class. Not to mention Doug again, or Bruce Turk from the 93/96 side, but these guys are crazily obsessed! I mean spending hours sanding down an engine compartment to remove every grime so their paint work wont lift. Even spending more hours to take every speck of grease off of the engine and tranny..or powder coatiing!

Well Damn! That makes my jaw drop a bit when I see everything detailed and shiny..even the fuel rail! I mean a full restoration of everything. not just a nice paint job and a worn interior. I mean everything restored. Then it dissapoints me when I look at my old "needy" yet clean Saabs. Now where does leave me?

It leaves me disatisfied. Now I find myself obsessed...very gung ho on spending hours upon hours, with my mememory of the albums as incentive) removing detailing and reassembling every little thing to perfection! Posts like Brently's restoration hooking me like bait.. To take a car from the junkyard..spend hours to beautify it so until it appears a gem.... Myself taking a four hour drive to collect some old funky coloured orange 99, and loving the thing like its gold. But it makes me feel good! I will not be satisfied until everything is clean and glistening.

What causes this perfectionist based motivation?

Thanks Doug
