The only difference between vented and non-vented calipers is the design/shape of the yoke. The pistons and caliper bore are the same from 75-87, so realistically he could always find replacements if he just kept using the same yoke.
He of course would still need to replace the hub and spindle to a 900 one to accept the vented rotors, and changing a rotor on a 900 is alot easier than changing one on a 99.
Back in 2002, we were traveling to a show near Boston in caravan, and a buddy in a 85 SPG was experiencing brake fade, but it took alot of spirited driving (100+ MPH speeds and hard braking) to make his brakes fade. He most likely boiled his brake fluid, which was of unknown vintage.
