Of Course, you shouldn't have smoke coming from anywhere ...You should be able to find an exhaust leak by listening or looking on a cold morning after first starting your car. The problem I see with that scenario is that the exhaust is passing on the other side of the car or down the middle so I wouldn't assume the smoke to be exhaust. As well, exhaust that is visible, just like the not so visible stuff, does indeed have a smell.

Does this happen once the car has warmed up or instantly on startup?

there are a few ways for engine fumes/smoke to get in the cabin and most are supposed to be sealed by rubber boots. The steering rack has one where it passes through the firewall. I'd look there first. The other is the shift-rod boot. I suppose you could add the heater core box but that should go through the vents. If your vent piping is loose I suppose you could suspect that. No matter the method, though, you shouldn't have smoke. Check electronic wiring (make sure you aren't grounding out on the column or something) as that should be visible by some melting and the likes. Few things will burn without an odor so I'm actually a bit confused with the whole deal, as are you of course -- hence the message.

Anyway, That was probably of no help whatsoever but I'm curious to know what you find.
