You got me thinking about this so I went out and checked MY 73 EMS. Now, I did just upgrade this car to a later rack and 86SPG brakes so I did still have the old TREs, rack and hubs. Sure enough, the taper does appear to be the same in spite of the thread differences.
Now, early on in my 99 career I had to replace TRE's on my '73 and the one the parts guy sold me didn't fit, taper or threads. I took it back and was told I got the later 75> TREs and not the correct early. So, now it looks like I had one for the completely wrong car! I've always gone on the assumption that the TRE was a completely different unit (69-74, 75-94) since.
This is why I am trying to get rid of my 69-74 cars and concentrate on 75-80 : )
