suspension is swappable. The later difference is in the e-brake. They operate the REAR brakes on the car with later set-ups. THat means you will either have to go without or transplant the hand brake mechanism as well. The brake lines don't match up (different threads) but you can have custom lines made that accomodate this.
The upper control arms on the early 99s did not have a swivel for the lower portion of the spring, so the spring would "curve" when compressed. The difference is in the A-arm itself and not necessarily in the spring design, though the early springs were pretty soft, relatively speaking. I see no problems replacing the whole front end with the newer stuff.
I've never seen the "jaguar" mount you mentioned. I would still move the firewall some no matter what clearance you achieve with the funky mount. It sucks to know that another 1/4 inch would have elliminated a huge rattle headache....ask me how I know.
Good luck. If the '74 is in good shape and you aren't set on suping the car, maybe a later 99 would be a better choice for the transplant. More items work with the later engine set-up and the cars are more plentiful. That being said, I transplanted into a decent '76EMS (though the car did have the later style goodies by '75), but I was aware of how the car was going to be used. I needed a freeway car that I could always find parts for. Going with the 16 valve engine and later 5speed just made sense at the time. I don't think I'd do it to another 99, though. It is not a 99 that I drive anymore, but a franken-thingy. It is loads of fun and as quirky as ever, but there was something special about the original tight-geared 4 speed and the B-Motor originally in the car.
