I know the question was for Doug, but being bored and a bit familiar with the topic i thought I'd chime in all the same.

A TIG is a much more precise instrument than a MIG. It can do beautiful work but I think you are looking above and beyond. A weld is a weld. It will still require grinding and sanding, which will probably still require, at the very least, a skim coat of something. In case you've never tried TIG welding, it is performed in a similar way to oxy/acetelene brazing-welding in that you liquify the metal and then add a filler, usually. The difference is that the TIG is instant, localized "heat". It is not a method that I would say is apt for contorted positioning. Precision welding is the word again. If you have to weld something up and under a wheel well, good luck with a TIG.

If you spot weld, and can do it well, then you shouldn't have to worry about warping the metal. just Spot until you are done, like Doug suggests. SOme people keep a spray bottle on hand to cool the welds as well. THe warping really hits when residual heat gets added with the new heat each time you zap. Get your heat and wirespeed set before you attack the actual car and you'll be fine. I am always in need of a TIG when I don't have one, (I do a lot of bronze/aluminum work as a sculptor) but when I've had one around, I've RARELY used it. This is because for the simple task of attaching steel to steel, a MIG is just so much easier.
