The fuel sender is nothing more than a variable resistor. There is a float, arm, and two sets of pick-up points < one for the fuel level and one for the low fuel light. A thin wire is looped around a square piece of masonite, and the points sweep across the wire. I have some pictures linked below, though '79's may have had a slightly different unit, the basic principle is still the same.
The ground wire on my 78T is soldered right to the top of the tank, with a tab connected to the top of the sending unit. The sending unit would be located under the wood floor in he trunk, under the smaller round cover.
