Late last year I finally got my hands on a 99 turbo, I have been after one for a long time. These are quite rare in Australia.
My wife has just this week, started talking to me again (she's jealous).
Anyway I finally got around to checking the engine to my surprise it started with only a little help. I checked the compression and number one to three cylinders read about 90 psi, with 120 psi in three. I didn't think to put some oil in the cylinders at the time but will do this when I can steel my wife's car battery again. The head appears to have gone as there is white goo in the oil. As I see it the engine appears to be fairly worn, the car has 320,000 km on the clock (around 200,000 miles for you Brits and Americans). I have owned later H - block and 16v Saab's but I haven't had much experience with the B-motor.
My questions are;
What are the prospects for the engine if I replace / rebuild the head. Is the lower end stuff likely to be in reasonable shape. I am happy to pull the head myself and the car came with a spare head in the boot. However if the remainder of the engine is not likely to last I will probably look for a changeover engine or just get the hole thing re-built (this option I can't do myself or really afford to pay someone).
Further to that, is there any way of telling if a B-cylinder head is a turbo head or a N/A head? I just found the second one in the boot and I can't contact the guy I brought it from.
I would be interested to know how much mileage some of the 99 owners have gotten out of there engines? I would love to know what the highest mileage was for a B-motor, having heard about the million mile 16v's etc.
This car is in reasonable condition, with the engine issues sorted there is not much to stop it getting on the road. I hope to get it working for now and maybe do a full restore down the track. - Ben.
